ABOUT THE ARTIST
Originally from Barbados, Melanie McCollin-Walker relocated to Lutruwita/Tasmania in 2017, drawn to its spectacular and awe-inspiring landscapes. Working primarily in acrylic on linen and charcoal on paper, her practice explores themes of solitude, self-reflection, and a profound connection to place.
McCollin-Walker's work is informed by intimate encounters with wild and remote landscapes, often experienced while hiking or kayaking through wilderness areas. These journeys provide both subject matter and a framework for reflection, shaping works that seek to capture not only the visible qualities of a landscape, but also its emotional resonance.Through subtle tonal shifts, delicate layering, and a quiet sensitivity to light and atmosphere, she creates evocative paintings and drawings that convey a sense of reverence, stillness, and fragility. Each work invites viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect - both with the natural world and with themselves.
Underpinning her practice is a belief in the power of landscape to foster connection, reflection, and a greater awareness of our place within the natural world. Rather than presenting overt narratives, her works encourage quiet observation and deeper engagement, opening a dialogue around stewardship, belonging, and the importance of preserving the landscapes we inhabit.
In recent years, McCollin-Walker's work has received significant recognition. She was awarded the People's Choice Award in the 2024 Glover Prize, acquired by Artbank, and selected as a finalist in the 2025 Hadley's Art Prize. She continues to exhibit nationally, with a growing audience drawn to the meditative quality and quiet power of her work.
